📓 Dal taccuino di Quotidea
Storie, appunti e domande dietro gli approfondimenti di Quotidea.it
I just discovered there’s a maple syrup mafia. And unfortunately, I’m not even kidding.
Nearly three thousand tons gone, barrels filled with water, and a multi-million dollar heist that reads like a comedy script.
Yesterday, I thought I’d had enough with the three safes in Garlasco.
Apparently not. 😂
Because today I discovered that someone in Canada managed to steal nearly three thousand tons of maple syrup.
Yes, you read that right.
Syrup.
The stuff for pancakes.
And that’s the point where I started laughing.
Then I found out that Quebec actually has a massive strategic reserve of maple syrup. It’s basically a bank, only instead of gold bars, there are rows of barrels.
And at some point, someone must have looked at it and thought:
“You know what? We’re taking it.”
Too bad a full barrel weighs over 270 kilos.
So it’s not like you walk in, stuff two under your coat, and run.
This required trucks, warehouses, siphoning, buyers, and probably someone very good with Excel. 😂
The best part, though, is that to avoid immediate detection, they emptied some barrels, filled them with water, and put them back in place.
Essentially the old trick of putting the empty box back in the pantry.
Except instead of two missing cookies, it was millions of dollars.
And this went on for months.
Until, during a routine check, an inspector stepped on a barrel and it moved.
Strange, because a full barrel weighs as much as half a living room set.
They checked it.
It was empty.
And from there, everything kicked off: an investigation, trucks, arrests, syrup ending up outside of Quebec, and a legal saga that went all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada.
I’m reconstructing the whole thing for Quotidea, and the further I go, the more I realize this story didn’t need to be fictionalized.
Reality had already done all the work.
But I swear, there’s one question that’s been haunting me since I started:
How the hell do you steal nearly three thousand tons of syrup without leaving half of Quebec sticky? 😂🍁
If anyone has a serious theory, I’m listening.
If your theory involves waffles, trucks, and people with their shoes glued to the asphalt, that works too. 😅
